THE ARDENNES - HIKING, CYCLING & MOUNTAINBIKING

National hiking trails

Of the 25 national hiking trails in Luxembourg, no fewer than 14 cross through the Ardennes. The following are among the most interesting of these walks:

  • „Upper Sûre Lake Circuit": circular route around the Upper Sûre lake, the largest drinking water reservoir in Luxembourg, located in the “Oewersauer” nature reserve; numerous vantage points (42km).
  • "North path":This superb hiking trail crosses through seven towns and villages that have the advantage of a railway link. Unrestricted views make this trail essential for all those wishing to combine their passion for trains with a love of photography. One example is Grénglay, which offers a magnificent view of the castle of Bourscheid, where the Hockslay promontory towers over the wild valley of the Wiltz (65km).
  • "Our path":Superb trail through the Our valley, largely unspoilt, particularly in the northern part; the trail ends in the medieval town of Vianden, lying in the shadow of a huge castle (58km)
  • "Charles Mathieu path":The west-east route links the Upper Sûre lake with the Our valley, crossing a number of plateaus with superb views, particularly eastwards from Kautenbach and on Mont-St-Nicolas (42km)
  • "Panorama path": the name says it all for this trail, which runs through the north westernmost part of the country - one of the least well-known corners of the region (42km).

All you can bike…

Did you know that the rugged terrain of the Luxembourg Ardennes is ideal for mountain biking? In fact, mountain biking enthusiasts can make the most of a remarkable variety of landscapes and a huge network of trails here. The 16 routes (ranging in length from 11 to 39 km), carefully selected and perfectly waymarked, lead through thick forests and steep-sided valleys, often affording views of sumptuous fortresses. The degrees of difficulty, from the easiest to the most difficult, have something for everyone, from experienced mountain bikers to families with children. All the routes are characterised by their natural setting. The exemplary waymarking of the routes is reflected in a panel erected at the starting point, giving all the details needed. The markers along the route are placed so as to ensure that changes in direction pose no problem, and sports lovers do not lose their way. A special mountain biking package is available, comprising a night in a double room with breakfast, information about mountain biking trails and maps, a picnic to take with you, facilities to wash and park mountain bikes, a repair service and a three-course menu. Some hotels also offer “luggage-free mountain biking” packages. The mountain biking routes are set out in detail in the guide entitled “Mountain Bike Tour - Luxembourg Ardennes”, published by Editions Guy Binsfeld and available from bookshops or via our Shop price: 12€.
