Mullerthal Trail hiking proposals
The Mullerthal Trail consists of three interconnected routes of 40km, 33km and 37km. As the length of these routes means that they are not necessarily suitable for one-day hikes, please find below a number of practical suggestions for hikes along the Mullerthal Trail (each 20km long).
Proposal 1:
Echternach – Moersdorf on route 1 (20km)
Start: Echternach bus station; arrival: Moersdorf. From Echternach, the walk first runs along the Sûre (river following the border with Germany) before crossing forests, rocks and countryside. The Tudor castle (and museum) and the Girsterklaus pilgrim chapel are among the sights to be seen along this route. Lovers of local produce will want to stop off at the Kulturhaff Millermoler in Hinkel. Return to starting point: bus 485 to Echternach
Proposal 2:
Mullerthal – Echternach along route 2 (20km)
Start: Moulin de Heringen information centre in Mullerthal; arrival: Echternach bus station. From Mullerthal, the path follows the Ernz Noire as far as the Schiessentumpel waterfall and crosses magnificent rock formations as far as the Moulin de Consdorf. The path through the woods then passes the spectacular caves and crevices of Rittergang, Déiwepetz and Kuelscheier, where a torch or a candle will be needed. The Mullerthal Trail then winds its way through widely varying landscapes of forests, rocks and fields to reach the town of Echternach. Cycling tours in the Mullerthal region – Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland
As well as walking, the Mullerthal region - Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland is ideal for cycling. Echternach lies at the intersection of national cycle paths No 2 (“Echternach”) – linking the abbey town with the capital – and No 3 (“Three Rivers” cycle path) Cycle path No 2 is somewhat more demanding and leads past some impressive rock formations. The “Three Rivers” cycle path runs along the Sûre and the Our (to Vianden, Diekirch or Wasserbillig at the confluence of the Sûre and the Moselle) as you prefer, and is suitable for the whole family.
